Canonical URL
The preferred public URL a page declares when the same or very similar content may be accessible through more than one address.
Example
A site might redirect its www host to the non-www host and declare the final HTTPS page as canonical.
Why it matters
Consistent canonicals help consolidate signals and avoid sending search engines conflicting instructions, but they do not replace redirects or useful content.
