Domains and Hosting

What Is Website Hosting?

Website hosting provides the computing, storage and network services that deliver a website to visitors. A domain is the address people use; hosting is the environment that responds with the website and runs any required application code.

01

Common hosting models

Shared hosting places many customers on one environment and can suit modest websites when managed well. VPS and dedicated hosting provide more isolation and control but require greater administration.

Cloud hosting can distribute resources across infrastructure. Static and serverless services suit particular architectures, while managed WordPress or e-commerce hosting adds platform-specific operations. No model is universally best.

  • Shared: economical, less isolated
  • Managed: more operational support
  • VPS: configurable virtual server
  • Dedicated: reserved hardware
  • Static/serverless: architecture-specific delivery

02

Resources and performance

CPU handles application work, memory holds active processes and storage contains files and data. Bandwidth describes transfer, while provider limits may also cover visits, build minutes, functions or database operations.

A CDN can cache suitable content near visitors. Server location still matters for uncached work and any regulatory or contractual requirements should be reviewed separately.

03

Backups, recovery and updates

An uptime percentage says little about how a business recovers. Ask how backups are created, isolated, retained and restored. Test recovery where the website is operationally important.

Managed does not always mean every application update is covered. Define responsibility for operating systems, plugins, application code, monitoring and incident response in writing.

04

Renewals, support and expiry

Introductory prices can rise at renewal. Check migration charges, traffic overages, backup restoration, support hours and whether business email is a separate service.

If hosting expires, the website may stop and retained data may eventually be deleted. Keep ownership details, billing contacts and renewal reminders current.

Common questions

Questions and answers

Is hosting the same as a domain?

No. The domain is the address; hosting delivers the website.

Is cloud hosting always better?

No. Suitability depends on architecture, management, cost and resilience requirements.

Does hosting include email?

Sometimes, but business email is often a separate product with separate DNS records and billing.

What happens if hosting expires?

The website can become unavailable and the provider may eventually remove stored data under its retention policy.

Need a considered recommendation?

Discuss the website, not just the symptom.

AHANIX reviews each requirement manually. Technical recommendations may depend on access to the website, hosting or DNS configuration.
