Foundation
An SSL certificate is a digital certificate installed and configured for a website's domain. It allows the website to establish an encrypted HTTPS connection with the visitor's browser.
When someone opens an HTTPS website, the browser and web server perform a process often referred to as a TLS handshake. During this process, the browser checks the certificate and both sides establish the secure connection used for the visit.
